| 1794 Hon. T. Erskine with bust. Reverse: A Friend To The Freedom & Rights Of Man. Thomas Erskine, first Baron Erskine (1750-1823) purchased a commission in 1st Royal Regiment of Foot in 1768 and later published a work on "Abuses in the Army". He was called to the Bar in 1778 and obtained notoriety winning a verdict of "not guilty" for Lord George Gordon. He was also a passionate supporter of negro emancipation. NG 265/427 |
